Trio Présence

With their new piano trio, Helmut Bieler-Wendt, Sue Schlotte, and Roman Stolyar devote themselves to the art of free improvisation—free play without any prior agreement or formal aesthetic constraints.

In doing so, they draw on their decades of experience with improvisation, without disregarding the traditions of the piano trio and the jazz trio. With their name, Trio Présence, they pay homage to one of the great masters of the 20th century, Bernd Alois Zimmermann, who, in his pluralistic sound compositions, knew how to incorporate musical material ranging from the Middle Ages, the Baroque, and the Classical periods to jazz and pop songs.

He wrote the following about his concept of time:

“The past, present, and future are, as we know, bound to the process of succession solely through their manifestation as cosmic time. In our mental reality, however, this succession does not exist—a reality that is more real than the clock we know so well, which, after all, indicates nothing other than that there is no ‘present’ in the strict sense. Time curves into a spherical shape.”

In this spirit, the Trio Présence employs a pluralistic improvisational technique that takes into account the complexity of our reality.

Mit ihrem neuen Klaviertrio widmen sich Helmut Bieler-Wendt, Sue Schlotte und Roman Stolyar der Kunst der Freien Improvisation, FreiSpiel ohne jegliche Absprache oder formalästhetische Bindung.

Dabei verlassen sie sich auf ihre jahrzehntelange Erfahrung mit der Improvisation, ohne die Traditionen des Klaviertrios und des Jazztrios auszublenden.

Mit ihrem Namen Trio Présence beziehen sie sich auf einen der großen Meister des 20. Jahrhunderts, Bernd Alois Zimmermann, der in seiner pluralistischen Klangkomposition musikalisches Material von Mittelalter, Barock und Klassik bis zu Jazz und Popsongs zu nutzen verstand.

Über seinen Zeitbegriffe schrieb er:

„Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft sind, wie wir wissen, lediglich an ihrer Erscheinung als kosmische Zeit an den Vorgang der Sukzession gebunden. In unserer geistigen Wirklichkeit existiert diese Sukzession jedoch nicht, was eine realere Wirklichkeit besitzt als die uns wohlvertraute Uhr, die ja im Grunde nichts anderes anzeigt, als dass es keine Gegenwart im strengeren Sinne gibt. Die Zeit biegt sich zu einer Kugelgestalt zusammen.“ In diesem Sinne bedient sich das Trio Présence einer pluralistischen Improvisationstechnik, die der Vielschichtigkeit unserer Wirklichkeit Rechnung trägt.
